About this tour

Ahsan Manzil – The Pink Palace of Dhaka

Standing proudly on the banks of the Buriganga River, Ahsan Manzil is one of Dhaka’s most iconic landmarks and a living testament to Bangladesh’s rich history. Known affectionately as the Pink Palace, this majestic building once served as the residence of the Nawab family of Dhaka. Today, it has been transformed into a captivating museum, attracting history lovers, architecture enthusiasts, and curious travelers from around the world.

A Glimpse into History

The origins of Ahsan Manzil date back to the Mughal era when the site was home to a garden house called the “Rang Mahal.” In 1830, the property was purchased by Khwaja Alimullah, a wealthy zamindar and influential figure in Dhaka’s history. His son, Nawab Khwaja Abdul Ghani, began the construction of the grand palace in 1859, naming it after his own son, Khwaja Ahsanullah. Completed in 1872, the palace quickly became the political and cultural center of the city.

Over the years, Ahsan Manzil witnessed numerous historic events, from royal gatherings to political negotiations. It stood through natural disasters, including the devastating tornado of 1888 and the great earthquake of 1897, both of which damaged the structure but could not diminish its grandeur. After restoration, the palace continued to serve as a symbol of prestige and power for the Nawab family until the early 20th century.

Architectural Brilliance

One of the most striking features of Ahsan Manzil is its architectural style—a unique blend of Indo-Saracenic Revival and European influences. The palace is painted a distinct pink color, which gives it its famous nickname. It consists of two main sections: the Rangmahal (residential quarters) and the Andarmahal (inner house), connected by an impressive central dome.

The façade is adorned with elegant Corinthian columns, arched windows, and intricate decorative details. Inside, visitors are greeted with high ceilings, antique furniture, chandeliers, and portraits that bring the Nawabi era to life. From the riverfront steps, the view of the Buriganga adds a romantic charm to the entire setting.

From Palace to Museum

By the mid-20th century, the grandeur of Ahsan Manzil had faded, and the building fell into neglect. Recognizing its historical value, the Government of Bangladesh acquired the property in 1952. Restoration work began in the 1980s, and in 1992, Ahsan Manzil officially reopened as a museum under the Bangladesh National Museum authority.

Today, the Ahsan Manzil Museum houses over 4,000 artifacts, including weapons, coins, clothing, household items, and personal belongings of the Nawab family. Each room tells a story—offering visitors a chance to step back in time and experience the life and legacy of Dhaka’s aristocracy
